Description

Today commercial cloud providers offer scalable cloud-based capabilities to transfer and process data, a problem also pertinent to space missions. In that context, economy of scale effects as realized by cloud providers have the potential to drastically improve efficiency, performance and scalability of ground segments. Satellite science and housekeeping telemetry, typically received at ground stations distributed around the globe, is today transferred over dedicated wide area networks, before finally processed and made available to users. In addition, also auxiliary data like radio science data, in particular Delta DOR measurements shall be considered. This activity looks at the potential of cloud-based data return and distribution, enabling a cloud based processing. Focus of this activity is, injection of data into a cloud close to a ground station. Potentially this can bring the processing to the data and not the other way around in this way relying on cloud capabilities to replicate the data to required destinations.
