LIP Students Bring Space and Medical Science to Algarve Students

LIP-ECO/Lígia Breda Melo | 13 February, 2025

"Bruna Lima and Gonçalo Ribeiro gave lectures at the Nobel Algarve British International School on space exploration and FLASH radiotherapy."

On February 10, students at the Nobel Algarve British International School in Lagoa had the opportunity to attend two scientific lectures given by PhD students from the LIP – Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics.

The initiative came as an invitation to Bruna Lima, a PhD student supervised by LIP researchers Patrícia Gonçalves and Luísa Arruda, and Gonçalo Ribeiro, a PhD student supervised by LIP researchers Pedro Assis and Patrícia Gonçalves, to share their research work with the students.

The lecture presented by Bruna Lima, "Exploring Space and Surviving Radiation", focused on the simulation of space environments, particularly those intended for human exploration, such as the interplanetary environment, the Moon, and Mars.

Meanwhile, Gonçalo Ribeiro delivered "The Role of Physicists in Shaping Our World", covering research on FLASH Radiotherapy, an innovative cancer treatment that uses high-dose rates to minimize side effects in patients.

The school provided extremely positive feedback, with students expressing enthusiasm and curiosity about the topics presented. According to the professor in charge, the lectures were an excellent opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of physics in various fields, from space exploration to innovative medical applications.

Bruna Lima is a member of LIP’s SpaceRad group, dedicated to studying the effects of radiation in space. Gonçalo Ribeiro is part of the RADART group, focused on developing new radiotherapy technologies.

The participation of LIP members in this event reinforces the institution’s commitment to promoting science and inspiring new generations to explore the vast world of scientific research.
