Masterclasses 2024

LIP-ECO/Carolina Felgueiras/Lígia Breda Melo | 12 April, 2024

"With several sessions held in Portugal, Cape Verde, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, the 2024 edition of the International Masterclasses in Particle Physics has ended"

Some essential milestones stand out in this edition, including the reinstatement of the sessions in Aveiro, which had been absent since 2019, and the 2nd edition of the Cosmic Ray (Auger) Masterclasses. LIP created the Auger Masterclasses, and this year, they took place in Braga, Lisbon (at the Instituto Superior Técnico), Évora and Funchal. However, they were eventually extended to more sessions, involving approximately 550 students at 17 institutions in 10 countries and four continents.

More than 780 students took part in the proposed activities on Portuguese soil alone.

The 2024 edition of the International Masterclasses in Particle Physics, organised by LIP, saw a significant expansion in its geographical scope. For the first time, sessions were held in Praia, at the University of Cape Verde, with 90 students participating, and in Beira, Mozambique, with 53 participants. This expansion underscores the event's growth and its increasing reach.

Mozambique also had a session in Maputo for the second time, with 10 participants. In São Tomé and Príncipe, at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of São Tomé and Príncipe, around 43 students, including 32 from various public schools, participated in the International Masterclasses in Particle Physics. The event was covered by São Toméan Television, shining a spotlight on its importance and impact on the local educational community. The Masterclasses have become an integral part of the Faculty's Annual Activities Plan, further demonstrating their global impact and recognition.

The 2024 Masterclasses thus close this edition, marking a significant milestone in disseminating knowledge in particle physics and promoting scientific education in various regions.
